Client Case

Hydrogen Burner Engineering: Explosion Safety Integration

What

A leading industrial client embarked on developing a new hydrogen burner to enhance their sustainable energy initiatives. Given hydrogen's unique properties - such as its wide flammability range and low ignition energy - the project posed significant explosion risks. Ensuring safety compliance from the outset was paramount to the project's success.

Solution

Safety Pilots collaborated closely with the client's engineering and safety teams to address these challenges. We conducted a comprehensive study to identify potential explosion risks associated with the hydrogen burner design. Based on our findings, we developed a detailed Explosion Protection Document (EPD), outlining necessary safety measures, zoning classifications, and equipment requirements. This included recommendations for ATEX-compliant components and the integration of advanced safety systems to minimize the risk of H2-leakage or detection.

As the project progressed, it became evident that the new burner was part of a broader hydrogen infrastructure within the facility. Other hydrogen-consuming units and interconnecting pipelines also required evaluation to ensure comprehensive safety compliance. Recognizing this, we expanded our scope to assess the entire hydrogen system, updating the site-EPD to encompass all related equipment and processes across the site.

Results

Through our proactive approach, the client achieved full compliance with explosion safety regulations, not only for the new hydrogen burner but across their entire hydrogen infrastructure. The updated EPD provided a unified framework for managing explosion risks, enhancing overall operational safety. This holistic safety integration has positioned the client to confidently pursue future hydrogen-related projects, knowing that robust safety measures are in place.
